Heat Wave Tips for a Happier Home

Norfolk County is feeling the heat this week and if you’re anything like us, your A/C is working overtime. Whether you're chilling at the cottage, staying cool in town, or powering through work-from-home days with a fan in your face, this heat wave is no joke. So let’s talk air conditioning and how to keep it running efficiently when you need it most.

1. Give Your A/C Some TLC

Your air conditioner is your MVP right now, so make sure it's in peak condition:

  • Change or clean your filter: A dirty filter makes your unit work harder and less efficiently. Experts recommend checking it monthly in the summer.

  • Check the outdoor unit: Clear away leaves, branches, or debris, and make sure there’s space for airflow.

  • Seal those sneaky leaks: Inspect windows and doors! Cool air might be slipping out and hot air sneaking in.

*Not sure where to start? Local pros like Norfolk Mechanical, D&B Climate Care, Brody’s Mechanical Services, and Good Guys Cooling & Heating are always a good call for service or a tune-up.

2. Use It Smarter, Not Harder

Here are a few ways to help your home stay cooler without cranking the A/C all day:

  • Close blinds and curtains during peak sun hours.

  • Run heat-generating appliances (oven, dryer, dishwasher) in the evening or early morning.

  • Use ceiling fans to help circulate air and reduce strain on your system.

3. If You Don’t Have A/C…

No air conditioning? You’re not alone. Try these tricks:

  • Hang a damp sheet in an open window.

  • Sleep with a cold water bottle at your feet (trust us).

  • Set up a DIY fan hack: place a bowl of ice in front of a fan for an improvised “cool mist” effect.

4. Hydrate and Rest

Last but not least: drink lots of water and electrolytes, take it easy when you can, and take breaks in cooler indoor spaces like one of our Norfolk County Library locations or a local coffee shop if home feels too hot to handle.

If you're thinking of upgrading your A/C or making home improvements to help with summer comfort, give us a shout. At Mummery & Co., we know homes inside and out and we’re always happy to help you feel more at home, no matter the temperature.
